Legislative Update

Budget and Session Recap

In recent months, I've listened to countless neighbors and community leaders share their worries about rising living costs, confusing insurance rules, and the impact of state budget decisions. These conversations have made it clear that our work in Springfield must address the day-to-day pressures facing families and seniors across the district.

In response, we worked hard during the spring session to pass a balanced budget and legislation to provide direct savings and to strengthen essential services. The FY 2027 spending plan freezes the state gas tax, expands medical debt relief and creates a back‑to‑school sales tax holiday. It also increases funding for Federally Qualified Health Centers, supports safety‑net hospitals, boosts free and reduced‑lunch programs and launches a FRESH program to help families afford groceries. Additional funding goes to public schools, property tax relief for districts, higher education infrastructure and community‑based violence prevention programs.

We advanced bills that raise the behind‑the‑wheel test age to 87, expand the Senior Freeze income limits, and require auto and home insurance companies to justify rate hikes with Illinois‑specific data while notifying customers before significant increases.

We also enacted consumer protection laws that ban junk fees, ticket bots and deceptive ticket sales, ensure stores offer non‑digital coupon options and establish AI safety standards to keep emerging technologies accountable.

I appreciate everyone who shared feedback and engaged in this process; your input guides our efforts to deliver policies that make life more affordable and secure for all our neighbors.

District Highlights

Engaging All Ages:

Youth Fair & Senior Town Halls

We kicked off summer with our Youth Fair, where students, families and community partners gathered for an afternoon of workshops and networking. It was inspiring to see the immense talent and community spirit of our local youth, and the event highlighted the many student-led organizations that enrich our district.

A special thank you for Bubble Tea & Books for generously providing boba for attendees. We're grateful to everyone who helped make the Youth Fair a success and look forward to creating more opportunities for young people to grow.

We continued our outreach by hosting two town halls tailored for seniors. The first was held at the Ela Township Community Center and the second at Cedar Lake Assisted Living and Memory Care. Both events provided updates on the recently concluded legislative session and gave attendees a chance to ask questions about state and district issues.

The conversations were thoughtful and informative, and we appreciate everyone who came out to share their perspectives. Our office remains committed to keeping residents of all ages engaged and informed.

Lunch and Learn: Medicaid and SNAP

Over the past few months we have heard from many community leaders and constituents about confusion and frustration surrounding recent changes to SNAP and Medicaid, which have made it harder for organizations to serve people who rely on these programs.

To address this uncertainty, our office partnered with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and the Illinois Department of Human Services for a virtual Lunch and Learn focused on how H.R. 1 affects Medicaid and SNAP. Experts from both departments shared updates, answered questions and helped community-based organizations understand how to support residents through these changes. I'm grateful to IDHFS, IDHS and the local service providers who joined us for taking the time to meet with our community and work together on behalf of our neighbors.
